Vintage Baby Presents... Vintage Toys for Today's Vintage Nursery
Feelings
of nostalgia are often stirred when thinking of childhood games and
the toys we loved most. Whether a teddy bear missing an eye, a baby
doll with real hair or a vintage wagon, the antics our imaginations
conjured could very well rival any video game.
The
wonderful thing about vintage toys is that they never lose their
appeal. You may discover pre-loved treasures in grandma's attic, in a
novelty shop or amongst online collections. These can become beloved
playthings for your own children and they also make unique decorative
accessories for your vintage nursery or playroom.
Vintage
Toy Wheelbarrows
Although
we might think of a wheelbarrow as a garden accessory, toy
wheelbarrows provided hours of fun to children in days gone by. Not
only can children use them to help with gardening chores, they can
also be used to wheel around dolls and transport toys from one
location to another.
As
well, a vintage toy wheelbarrow can be added to your nursery to hold
books, stuffed animals and other small toys, adding a vintage flair
to your decor. You can usually find vintage toy wheelbarrows in a
variety of materials including wicker, wood and painted tin.
Vintage
Tricycles
Tricycles
are still very popular amongst youngsters who are not yet ready to
ride a bicycle. Vintage tricycles are usually feature an oversized
front wheel with two smaller wheels on each side at the back with a
step for a friend to go along for the ride.
While
today's tricycles are usually made from a combination of plastic and
aluminum, vintage tricycles were usually crafted from heavier type
metal painted in a variety of colors, the most classic being cherry
red.
A
vintage tricycle can also be used to add vintage style to your
nursery or playroom, with some being used as a planter for non-toxic
plants or floral arrangements where the seat would normally be.
Vintage
Hobby Horses
There
may be no other children's nursery toy that captures vintage beauty
better than the old fashioned hobby horse also referred to in some
Mother Goose rhymes as a cock horse. Consisting of a long stick with
a horse's head crafted from wood or fabric on one end and possibly a
pair of reins, this child's riding toy was particularly popular in
the days before automobiles.
A
hobby horse would make a great addition to any vintage nursery or
playroom especially when fashioned from high quality materials
including solid wood, wool and handcrafted leather detailing.
Vintage
Rocking Horse
The
rocking horse is a classic children's toy that has stood the test of
time. Many rocking horses found in toy stores today are simply shaped
and crafted from synthetic materials, however, this was not always in
the case. In the past, attention was given to truly capturing the
equine form and character resulting in some fine works of art. In
fact, some collectors dedicate a good deal of time to restoring
vintage rocking horses to their original state of class, beauty and
elegance.
Whether
you opt for a vintage-style recreation or a true vintage collector's
piece, a rocking horse is a classic addition to any vintage nursery
or playroom.
Vintage
Bob Skates
Vintage
bob skates harken the days of fresh air, rosy cheeks and hours spent
gliding on a frozen pond. Bob skates are often nothing more than a
double pair of blades that affix with leather straps to the bottom of
a child's winter boots. They provide more stability than classic ice
skates and are sometimes adjustable to adapt to children's growing
feet. Whether your youngster wants to try them out on the ice rink or
you prefer to use them as a decorate piece, vintage bob skates are a
lovely bit of nostalgia from a past era.
Safety
Safety
regulations in the past were not as stringent as the ones that are in
place today, so it's important to always keep safety in mind with
vintage toys. Be alert to any small parts that could be a potential
choking hazard and keep in mind that the paint used on vintage toys
could contain lead. If you are concerned about the safety of a
particular vintage toy, it might be best to use as a decorative item
only.
Also,
use caution when cleaning vintage toys. Cotton swabs or old
toothbrushes can be used to remove dirt in deep crevasses and cracks
but be sure to use gloves and eye protection when using bleach to
whiten older rubber or vinyl items to avoid injury.
You
can recapture the delight of your childhood and free the imagination
of your little ones with classic vintage toys from yesterday. These
toys never lose their appeal and will capture the hearts of the whole
family!
